Nutmeg recalled because of Salmonella risk
Frontier Natural Products Co. of Norway, Iowa, is recalling nutmeg sold under its own name and a Whole Foods Market name because of a risk of Salmonella contamination, according to a Nov 30 company press release posted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The firm said no illnesses have been linked to the products. The nutmeg was supplied by Mincing Overseas Spice Co. of Dayton, N.J., which was a supplier of black pepper that was implicated in a 2009 Salmonella outbreak traced to pepper-coated sausages from a Rhode Island firm. The products recalled by Frontier include 16-ounce packages of nutmeg sold under the name Frontier Bulk and 1.92-ounce packages sold under the name Whole Foods 365. The products were sold to distributors, retailers, and consumers in all 50 states and parts of Canada, the company said.

Gates Foundation funds RSV vaccine development
NanoBio Corporation, based on Ann Arbor, Mich., announced yesterday that it has receive a $6 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop an intranasal vaccine against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Ali Fattom, PhD, NanoBio's senior vice president of vaccine research and development, said in a press release that the disease is the leading cause of child hospitalization in the United States, and RSV is thought to be the most common cause of viral pneumonia in some parts of Africa. Pneumonia is the leading cause of childhood death in sub-Saharan Africa. Currently there are no approved RSV vaccines. He said the NanoBio vaccine, administered with a nasal dropper, would be well suited for use in developing countries, because it safely provokes a robust immune response without the need for refrigeration or the use of needles for administration. The company said a recent phase 1 trial suggested that a single dose of the
vaccine in 199 healthy adults was safe and well tolerated and elicited mucosal and systemic immune responses.
