Since the first of the year officials have tallied 87,000 suspected cases in 23 of the DRC's 26 provinces.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 41 more measles cases in the past week, raising 2019's total number of cases to 1,022, a record for the post-elimination era.
"This is the greatest number of cases reported in the U.S. since 1992 and since measles was declared eliminated in 2000," the CDC said today.
"Measles is an incredibly contagious and dangerous disease," HHS Secretary Azar says.
In its regular weekly report on measles, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today reported 41 more illnesses since its update the previous week, boosting the year's total so far to 981 cases. The CDC added that this year's number so far is the highest in the United States since 1992 and the highest since the disease was eliminated in 2000.
A large chunk of cases are from 2 big outbreaks in and around New York City.
In global developments, European officials warn of a growing gap in vaccine coverage, and the WHO certifies measles and rubella elimination in Bahrain, Oman, and Iran.
The agency is tracking 10 active outbreaks across the country, including one involving almost 500 cases in New York City.
International travel and low vaccination rates have combined to ignite outbreaks.
Part of the weekly rise in measles infections is related to further cases in ongoing outbreaks.
